The progressive urbanization of the 1920s, with the emergence of the phenomenon of the modern city, yielded a creative consciousness that was both challenging and daring. In Japan as well, under the influence of the European avant-garde movement, artists such as Tetsugoro YOROZU and Seiji TOGO did indeed demonstrate avant-garde tendencies in their works and activities.

The current exhibition takes up the question of the cultural interplay between Japan and Europe from this perspective, focusing on the connections with dailylife. Works and related materials will be presented from a variety of genres, including painting, sculpture, industrial art, design, architecture, photography, and art education. Through them, a review will be made of the entirety of the Japanese prewar avant-garde, combined with an exploration of the underlying roots of contemporary art.

"Revive Time" Kaki Tree Project in Mito -- Prologue 2000

"Bombed Kaki Tree Jr."

Katsuhiko Hibino Workshop
at the 48th Venice Biennale, 1999

February 5 (Sat) to March 22 (Wed), 2000
Contemporary Art Gallery, Room 9 and Workshop
This project aims to let children experience for themselves the power of life and peace through the planting of persimmon trees that came from the seeds from persimmon trees irradiated in the Nagasaki A-bombing in 1945.

The trees will be planted in day-care centers, nursery schools, and grade schools, all of which have been chosen as sites because the trees can be cared for there by many people, particularly children.

The workshop this time will include works that he exhibited at the 48th Venice Biennale earlier this year, as well as a report of his activities. In addition, he will introduce his connection with kaki (persimmon) tree-planting activities around the country. Participants in the workshop will have a fun time experiencing the concepts and significance of Miyajima's art project, and will be led by the members of the workshops's executive committee. We are also looking for people who can be "foster parents" for trees to be planted in March 2001.
