This exhibition of Eiji Mitooka, a designer mainly works for Kyushu Railway Company, features the diverse creation of his 25 years history with idea sketches, posters, chairs, desks and model vehicles.
The exhibition is designed to encourage children to get interested in public design. It is structured to enable visitors to enjoy a journey around the world of design.


Scheduled Main Exhibits

'Eiji Mitooka Railway Design' presents design activities that Eiji Mitooka and Don Design Associates have continued for 25 years in the field of public design through idea sketches, renderings, illustrations, graphics, editorials, uniforms, products, architecture, interior, furniture, textiles, writings, landscapes and presentations with video.

Superb railway journey ─ dream of a cruise-train

The idea and concept of an ongoing project of a cruise-train are specifically introduced.

Eiji Mitooka’s background

His profile, early years of his life, his ideas and stance on design are described.

Delightful paintings

His works in a number of fields, not limited to rolling stock of Kyushu Railway Co., are introduced on panels.

Process of evolution ─ innovative express trains

The designs, features and fascinations of the express trains that are the pride of Kyushu Railway Co. after Tsubame series 787 are introduced.

Enriched journey ─ trains assembled

Introduced are attractive rolling stock and its designs of Kyushu Railway Co. including a variety of sightseeing and commuter trains.

Locus of design ─ innovation of rolling stock shown by materials

Samples, experimental items and products produced in the course of designing are exhibited and those processes are explained

Designer and illustrator. Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1947. Founded Don Design Associates in 1972. Mitooka has been working on wide-ranging designs including architecture and railway. For his designs of Kyushu Railway Company rolling stock and railway stations, he won many awards including international railway-related awards such as Burunel Award and Blue Ribbon Award, as well as MAINICHI DESIGN Award (2010) and Kikuchi Kan Award (2011). His important designs include the Kyushu Shinkansen series 800 “TSUBAME” , super-express series 787, 883 and 885, “TAMA TRAIN” and “TAMA STATION.”

Art Tower Mito will charter an "Art Bus," taking Mito City elementary and junior high school students to the exhibition. Students will explore the artworks, with exceptional programs guided by the artist Gojing-Maru Hayashi and university student staff members.
