Mito Chamber Orchestra
The 91th Regular Concert

October 4 (Sat.), 2014, to October 5 (Sun.), 2014

The great Swiss oboist Heinz Holliger first appeared with the MCO in the 85th Regular Concert, held the year before last, at which he made a spectacular impression upon the audience, even by the standards of all the MCO concerts to date. The upcoming October concert marks his triumphant return to Mito. As in the previous performance, he will lead the group with the director's baton while also performing as oboe soloist, parlaying both with consummate skill.
The program will be launched with a symphony by Haydn, just as in the 2012 concert, at which time it deeply impressed all who had the chance to listen to it. That will be followed by the Double Concerto for Oboe, Harp and Chamber Orchestra by the contemporary Polish composer Lutosławski, in which Holliger pairs up with the French harpist Chantal Matthieu as soloist on the oboe. The final piece will feature the fantasy-laden music of Debussy from the ballet La Boîte à joujoux ("The Toy Box"), with the rakugo artist Karoku Yanagiya making an unusual appearance as narrator! He will be explaining the background to the individual scenes in that work.
