Yuri Bashmet

Conductor & Viola

His unsurpassed performance technique, his fierce individuality, and his superb musicality have expanded the presence of the viola as an instrument. As one of the most outstanding musicians of modern times, Bashmet plays a dual role on the stages of the world—both as a conductor and as a viola soloist.
Born in Russia in 1953, he won first prize in the viola division of the Munich International Music Competition in 1976, which served as the launching point for his global career. Since then, he has served as soloist with leading orchestras of the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO), and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), to mention a few.
In 1992, he founded the Moscow Soloists Chamber Ensemble. Since then, the group, with Bashmet serving as both conductor and soloist, has performed to raving applause in Moscow, Amsterdam, Tokyo, New York, London, and other venues around the globe. Elsewhere, he has been invited to conduct and/or to perform as soloist with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Milan Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He also serves as principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of New Russia (Novaya Rossiya State Symphony Orchestra). In the area of chamber music, Bashmet has performed with the likes of Sviatoslav Richter, Gidon Kremer, Mstislav Rostropovich, Michael Guttman, Viktoria Mullova, the Borodin String Quartet, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. He has also appeared in many music festivals, including the Verbier Festival (Switzerland) and the Beppu Argerich Music Festival (Japan). In addition, he has released many CD’s, having won the Diapason d’Or Award and been nominated for a Grammy. The recordings of the Moscow Soloists Ensemble are also rated highly.
Bashmet plays on a 1758 viola made by Paolo Testore (who also made Mozart’s viola).
