Barbara Bonney Soprano Recital
CANCELLATION
Piano: Malcolm Martineau
Secret thoughts, requited love, utter disappointment...the limpid voice of Barbara Bonney gently envelops us as she conveys to us the various aspects of the lonely heart.
"In the past, I used to want to be a musical therapist and help cure people through music. Performing lieder is close to that," she says.
Music has the power to change people's lives. Listening to Barbara Bonney can help us, perhaps,
restore something that has been misplaced or lost in our modern way of life.

Profile of Barbara Bonney
The U.S.-born soprano, Barbara Bonney, was raised in a rich musical environment.
At age five she started piano, then learned the cello from age eight.
Majoring in both music and German at the University of New Hampshire, she traveled to Salzburg, Austria after graduation for further studies.
She studied German at the University of Salzburg and voice at the Mozarteum.
She made her debut in 1979 at the Darmstadt State Opera House, playing the part of Anna in the "Merry Wives of Windsor."
She was associated with that opera house for four subsequent years,
appearing in numerous operas, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Hansel and Gretel."
In 1983 and 1984, then, she belonged to the Frankfurt State Opera House, and has since performed independently.
In 1984, Bonney debuted at the Bavarian National Opera House,
playing the part of Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, under the direction of Carlos Kleiber.
She made her Covent Garden debut with the same work the same year, this time under the direction of Georg Solti.
The following year, in 1985, Bonney made her debut at La Scala in Milan, playing the part of Pamina in Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch.
In 1986, she debuted at the Zurich Opera House, performing in the same work under Nicholas Harnoncourt.
The following year, in 1987, she made her Metropolitan Opera House debut in New York in
Adriane aux Naxos under the baton of James Levine. Bonney has thus steadily advanced her career as an opera singer on her route to stardom.
Bonney has played memorable roles in front of Japanese audiences as well; in 1994,
she appeared in Der Rosenkavalier with the Vienna National Opera under the direction of Carlos Kleiber,
and in 1996 she played the part of Tiresias in "Les Mamelles de Tiresias" with the Saito Kinen Orchestra,
under the direction of Seiji Ozawa.
In the 1990s, Bonney's career has laid greater stress on song and religious works.
While her repertoire centers around German-language works by such composers as Bach,
Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, and Richard Strauss, it also extends more broadly to Grieg,
Sibelius, Delius, Britten, and Barber. As her intellectual singing style precisely captures the style of each work,
Bonney has also won the trust of conductors of ancient and medieval music, including John Eliot Gardiner,
Nicholas Harnoncourt, Trevor Pinnock, Frans Brüggen,
Christopher Hogwood, and she performs often with them.
Major recording labels have made many CDs -- now numbering 60 -- of part of Bonney's broad repertoire.
She is now recording exclusively with the Decca label, releasing such CDs as "The Works of Robert and Clara Schumann"
with the pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, and "American Songs" with Andre Previn.
She soon plans to release an album of Richard Strauss songs with the pianist Malcolm Martineau,
her performance partner at October's concert at ATM.
Bonney is also actively engaged in master classes, believing she ought to pass on the techniques
of performing songs and lieder to the next generation while she is still an active performer
herself.
Profile of Malcolm Martineau
The British pianist Malcolm Martineau studied music at St. Catherine's College in Cambridge,
moving to London in 1981 to study at the Royal College of Music under such teachers as Geoffrey Parsons,
Kendall Taylor, and Joyce Rathbone. He has been active as an accompanist from quite early on,
working in that role in master classes held by John Sutherland, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf,
Suzanne Danco, and Ileana Cotrubas at the Britten-Piers School of Music.
Martineau has accompanied many world-famous singers, such as Barbara Bonney,
Angela Gheorghiu, Felicity Lott, Susan Graham, Anne-Sophie von Otter, Frederika von Stade,
Janet Baker, Ian Bostridge, Bryn Terfel, Simon Keenlyside, and Olaf Bahr.
He has also performed as an accompanist at various music festivals throughout Europe,
to high acclaim. His recent recordings include collections of Schubert songs,
Schumann songs and English songs with Bryn Terfel (all on Deutsche Gramophone),
and an album of Schubert and Richard Strauss songs with Simon Keenlyside, on the EMI label.
