J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Suite for Unaccompanied Cello No. 5 in C minor (BWV1011)

In his suites for unaccompanied cello, Johann Sebastian Bach created a musical microcosm. Hidemi Suzuki, a master of the gut-string cello, unravels the mystery of that creation.

There is a limit to the number of sounds that can be produced in the microcosm of the Unaccompanied Suites, because, after all, there is only one cello playing. Nonetheless, Bach knew that as long as he stretched the imagination of both the player and the audience to the limit, an unbounded expanse of sound could emerge from that instrument that was in no way inferior to that of an orchestra. For example, one hears a harmony that is not supposed to exist, and an illusory counterpoint fools the ear. In other words, his microcosm is replete with secret devices. That said, the scenery rendered visible by that world is by no means impersonal. The music of Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello weaves an unending tapestry of feeling -- including everything from speech and song to joy, grief, and prayer -- along with its richness of gestures, bouncing along with the light step of the baroque dance.

Mr. Hidemi Suzuki performs Bach's Unaccompanied Suites for Cello on a baroque-style instrument. But his performance is far removed form the backward-looking "antique revival" movement. Without relying on stereotyped preconceptions, he attempts to follow Bach's line of thought through his own body. What he has captured as a result is not merely the music of Bach, but is, undeniably, young and fresh "living music" as well.
