On the Debut Performance of "Interplay for Flute and String Ensemble"

By Toshi Ichiyanagi

Moving away from an era characterized by a dualistic world with two different and competing elements, recent times have seen the mutual interaction and permeation by things once viewed as opposite to each other in a variety of fields. For instance, one may cite the interplay between the societies of what used to be called the "West" and the "East" [during the Cold War era], as well as that between the natural and the artificial, time and space, and the Orient and the Occident. The most symbolic instance of this development can be seen in the changes in international affairs and in culture in recent times.

One can compare this situation to the mixing and "quarreling" between the fresh water of the river and the salt water of the ocean at their point of intersection. The area in which that interplay takes place is neither a river nor an ocean, but a zone that combines the elements of the two in mutual permeation. The situation today in a variety of fields resembles that interplay. During the crossbreeding of different species, while accompanied by pain and friction, confusion yields eventually to coexistence, and eventually to the formation of a new world order. That is the impression that one gets.

The past few years have seen me compose several works with the word "water" in their title (in Japanese). These include my piano concerto No. 3, entitled "Cross Water Roads," and the quintet "Aquascape." I would be happy if the listeners to my newest work, "Interplay," would reflect a bit on the projection of this thought on the work.

"Interplay" consists of one movement, and is performed by one flute, ten violins, four violas, three cellos, and two contrabasses.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for having been given the precious opportunity to compose a work at this time. It was a great pleasure for me to hear the work performed by such an illustrious group as the Mito Chamber Orchestra.
