トン・コープマン氏へのインタビュー
Q1：マエストロ・コープマン、あなたが水戸室内管弦楽団（以下MCO）と共演してくださることを嬉しく思います。まず、MCOの印象についてお聞かせいただけますか。
Q1: Maestro Koopman, we are very grateful that you have agreed to conduct the Mito Chamber Orchestra.
Would you be so kind as to give us your impression of the ensemble?
A1 コープマン：MCOは日本以外の国々でも有名です。すばらしい音楽家の方々と共演できるのがとても楽しみですね。
A1 Mr. Koopman: "The MCO has a famous name outside Japan as well. Therefore, I look forward very much to working with these great musicians".
Q2：今回水戸室内管弦楽団との共演にあたって、マエストロはシューベルト作品をプログラムに選ばれました。マエストロはかつて、ご自分の活動範囲が原則としてバロック音楽にあり、19世紀以降の音楽を取り上げるとしてもそれは例外的なケースであると発言されています。その中でシューベルトはオランダ放送室内管弦楽団との録音もあり、特別な愛着を感じられている作曲家であると思われます。マエストロが考えられるシューベルト音楽の魅力についてお聞かせください。
Q2: Maestro, you chose works by Schubert in the concert program this time.
However, I remember having once read an interview of yours in which you said that you were primarily interested in baroque music, and that you would only play 19th century music under exceptional circumstances.
Still, I get the feeling that Schubert is a special favorite of yours, as you have recorded his symphonies with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra.
Please tell us why this composer's music is so attractive to you.
A2 コープマン：シューベルトはいつも私のお気に入りの作曲家でした。個人的には、歌手の伴奏で、シューベルト歌曲を演奏してきたのですよ！
A2 Mr. Koopman: "Schubert has always been a composer I was fond of. I have secretely accompanied singers with Schubert songs, that is why!"
Q3：今回はシューベルトの2曲の名作交響曲がカップリングされたプログラムです。オランダ放送室内管弦楽団とのディスクも同じカップリングですが、マエストロはこの2曲の組み合わせがお好きなのではと拝察します。Q2と重なる部分もあるかもしれませんが、この2曲の交響曲についてマエストロが感じられる魅力はなんでしょうか。
Q3: As you included both the 5th and 8th (the Unfinished) Symphonies of Schubert's in your MCO program -- the same two that were coupled on one of your discs -- my sense is that you especially like performing these two works together.
I may sound a bit repetitive, but please let us know what strikes you about these pieces.
A3 コープマン：シューベルトの〈交響曲 第5番〉はモーツァルトの〈交響曲 第40番〉と多くの共通点があります。ご存知の通り、シューベルトはモーツァルトの〈40番〉を聴いてからこの曲を書いたのでした。〈未完成〉は大オーケストラのための本当に美しい交響曲である、というひと言につきます。シューベルトは気の毒なことにこの交響曲の実演を生前耳にすることができませんでした。
A3 Mr. Koopman: "Schubert No. 5 has a lot in common with Mozart no. 40. As you know Schubert wrote no. 5 after hearing Mozarts "40". The unfinished is simply a very beautiful symphony for a big orchestra. A pity Schubert himself never heard his symphony performed".
Q4：歌曲のレーガー編曲版はかなり珍しいレパートリーですね。最近シューベルト歌曲のさまざまな管弦楽伴奏版がメルテンス盤、オッター盤などを通じ少しずつ知られるようになっていますが、レーガー版を選ばれた理由は？
Q4: You have included several orchestrations by Reger of Schubert's lieder in your program.
While we have had some exposure to the orchestral arrangements of those pieces, having listened to the recordings of Klaus Mertens and Anne Sofie von Otter, Reger's arrangements are quite rare.
Please tell us why you chose them.
A4 コープマン：シューベルト歌曲のいくつかはじっさい、レーガーのインストゥルメンテーション（訳注：ピアノ・パートをどのような管弦楽配置に置き換えるか）を必要としています。
A4 Mr. Koopman: "Some of Schuberts songs really gain by Regers instrumentation (Erlkoenig)".
Q5：バリトンのクラウス・メルテンスとはよく共演されていますが、同氏についてご紹介いただけますか。
Q5: You often perform with Klaus Mertens. Could you tell us something about him?
A5 コープマン：彼はまさしくバッハにふさわしい低音歌手です。彼くらいみごとにバッハを歌う歌手を、私は知りません。そのことに比べると知られてはいないのですが、彼はシューベルトとメンデルスゾーンもみごとに歌います。音楽家であることを別にして、彼は私のほんとうにだいじな友人でもあります。
A5 Mr. Koopman: "He is THE bass singer for Bach. I don't know anybody else who can do it better than him. A less known fact is that his performances of Schubert and Mendelssohn are really great as well. Apart from his musicianship he is also a great friend of mine".
Q6：マエストロは8年前に水戸芸術館ですばらしいオルガン演奏をしてくださいました。あなたがまた指揮者として再訪されることを、多くの聴衆が楽しみにしています。水戸の聴衆に向けてのメッセージをお願いします。
Q6: Maestro, you gave a splendid organ concert at Art Tower Mito eight years ago, so the audience here is looking very much forward to hearing your performance this time as a conductor.
Do you have any special message to leave with your Mito fans?
A6 コープマン：あたたかい水戸の聴衆の皆さんが、よりモダンな音楽（シューベルト）を演奏するコープマンを受け容れてくださいますよう。8年前のファンタスティックな思い出（註：1995年のオルガン・リサイタル）を胸にこの地を再訪するのはすばらしいことです！
A6 Mr. Koopman: "I hope that the warm MITO audience will accept Koopman with more modern music (Schubert) as well. Great being back, having a fantastic memory of eight years ago!"
