Working Together with the Children Who Support Our Future

Art Tower Mito (ATM) strives to link the past with the future and tradition with creation. In that spirit, we place a strong emphasis on including children in our programs. Below are described some of the activities we have organized for children this year.

Joint Performance with Mito Chamber Orchestra (MCO)

In June 1998, 14 elementary school pupils performed with the Mito ChamberOrchestra (MCO), ATM's world-class "dream orchestra," in its 34th Regular Concert.

The pupils, all attending Mito elementary schools, were chosen from a total of 92 applicants in a "grand lottery" that took place on March 29. The winning participants underwent training given by education students from local universities in the Mito vicinity, and started practicing once a week beginning in April. They then rehearsed with the MCO four times before the actual concerts were given on June 27 and 28.

The performance came off brilliantly and met with great acclaim. The fact that the pupils were chosen by lottery and not because of any special musical education demonstrates the unlimited potential of children, enhanced by the easygoing pedagogical methods of the university students.

ATM Tour and Pipe Organ Concert for Preschoolers

So as to acquaint and familiarize young children with art in general and the activities of Art Tower Mito in particular, a tour of the facilities is given to a group of preschoolers once a month, including a chance for them to hear the pipe organ in the Entrance Hall. As the tour takes place on museum holidays, it takes advantage of the relaxed atmosphere of ATM when no other visitors are around. A professional organist, Ms. Motoko Murozumi, has been invited to perform famous organ works for the young children for about half an hour, and she gives explanations that are easy to understand. Making the concert even more fun is the chance for the preschoolers to sing along with the performance, and to actually touch the organ keyboard and make the instrument play different sounds.

The tour, which is free, is aimed at preschoolers registered at nursery schools or day-care centers in Mito City. Only one group of up to 30 children can be accommodated each time.

Any inquiries or requests for reservations should be directed to the ATM office, either by phone at (029)227-8111 or by E-mail at webstaff@arttowermito.or.jp
