New Year's Concert '99
The Step Linking the World Together
Jan. 5, 1999 (Tue) 6:30 p.m. (open for seating at 6:00 p.m.)
ATM Concert Hall
A ¥4,000 B ¥3,000 (all seats reserved)
Special guest performer
Mutsumi Hatano (soprano)
Musical adviser: Katsuya Matsubara, MCO member, violinist
The program of the concert includes Medieval and Renaissance dance music,
as well as "dance music on the score" composed by J. S. Bach, W. Mozart, Beethoven,
Johann Strauss, Bartok, Stravinsky, and Piazzolla.
Music is not just a cerebral exercise but is also produced (inspired) by the feet.
Even dour composers devoted much of their time to writing works set to a lively step.
If we take the while to listen to such "dance music on the score,"
perhaps the true power of music -- gradually becoming forgotten --
can be restored. These run the gamut from the estampie, the pavane,
the saltarello, the courante, the sarabande, the minuet, and the waltz,
all the way to the polka, the tango, and the bossa nova.
Using "dancing music" as his clue, Mr. Katsuya Matsubara,
discovers for us the universal language of music that permeates the world.
For our New Year Concert of 1999, on the brink of the new century,
we present you "a listening ball."
