Program 1: "Narukami"
Performers
Narukami (Holy Priest): Danjiro Ichikawa
Kumo no Taema-hime (Princess): Emiya Ichikawa
The holy priest Narukami, angered by the harsh treatment dealt to him by the emperor,
exacts revenge by placing a curse that causes a drought and makes the peasants suffer.
To nullify the curse, the emperor dispatches the princess, Kumo no Taema-hime.
Captivated by her beauty and movements, the holy priest becomes a prisoner of carnal desire,
which releases the curse, enraging the priest.
There is plenty worth seeing in this performance, including the grand swirls, poses, and the beauty of the "onnagata" (male actor performing a woman's part).
Program 2: "Onna-date" (Female Gallant)
Onna-date: Emisaburo Ichikawa & Shun'en Ichikawa
In this performance, two "onna-date" (female gallants) perform a majestic dance under cherry blossoms blooming in Yoshiwara Naka-no-machi.
Carrying both an "ippon-zashi" (short sword) and a shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute held vertically),
they pick a fight with a male gallant from Kamigata (Osaka).
