A groundbreaking project by Shuji Onodera, a young, up-and-coming Japanese stage director, who has boldly taken a new look at one of Japan's so-called "underground" plays, written in the latter 1960's by Juichiro Takeuchi, through a contemporary perspective. The play -the name of which is a Japanese pun on "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)," an artwork produced between 1915 and 1923 by the French-born American artist Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)- was originally written for three men, but is performed at ACM Theatre this time by three women. Moreover, given that it is being directed Onodera -famous for his emphasis on "physical theater"- the play relies heavily on bodily expression to convey meaning.
