Tsubaki Noboru “TESTUO” Installation view at Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito

Noboru Tsubaki first presented his concept of "Insect World" at the 2001 Yokohama Triennale, to which he submitted an installation portraying a giant grasshopper. After the shocking terrorist attacks of 9/11 that year, he developed the concept of the UN Application Project.” By emphasizing the role of the UN as a peacekeeping army, Tsubaki -- who is both an educator and artist -- has sent the world a message questioning the meaning of peace and maintaining it.

Tsubaki's upcoming exhibition at ATM is the first realization of this project in exhibition form. He put it together with the aim of turning the gallery space into a visual experience stressing the strong need for communication to be continually carried out among people having various opinions, if peace is to be maintained.

In preparing for the exhibition, Tsubaki has organized a group of young creators into the "Tsubaki-gumi," and has employed a new method of organizing exhibitions by collaborating with them and using their ideas in appropriate instances.

The exhibition has been spread out in the several rooms of the Contemporary Art Gallery as follows: a test-firing room enshrining a 5-meter-tall (16-feet-tall) teddy bear, a promotion room for the mine-searching #7 Penta original robot, a classroom with words at rocky places, and display rooms showing weapons and original military uniforms. The whole exhibition is infused with Tsubaki’s expressive spirit, which is pop in feeling and easy to relate to.

There will be lectures and workshops conducted during the course of the exhibition, as well as a special display of Tsubaki's giant grasshopper.
