Claude Lévêque, born in France in 1953, has been celebrated as a leading representative of his country's art following the generation of such artists as Daniel Buren and Christian Boltanski.
The ATM exhibition to be held from December to March of next year is the first full-scale exhibition of Lévêque's works in Japan. He will design a new work especially for the exhibition so as to match the special spatial characteristics of the Contemporary Art Gallery.
Since the 1980s, Lévêque has produced nostalgic artworks that employ photographs and light, rooted in his own personal memories. However, more recently he has shifted towards the creation of giant installations intended to stimulate the five senses through the use of sound, light, and mist. The "viewers" of his works can thus experience them with their whole bodies and not just their eyes.
At ATM, Lévêque plans to put on an experiential type of exhibition that uses neon lights, moving images, and sound.
