"Japanese Summer 1960 - 64" was given as one of the productions for "Japanese Art 1960s," the first full-scale joint programs by the three divisions of Art Tower Mito as a complex cultural institution. The exhibition was concerned with the first half of the 1960s, the period from 1960 to 1964, during which the world of art witnessed the appearance of "Neo Dadaism Organizers" and the collapse of the "Yomiuri Independant." In the society of postwar Japan, this was the hottest period between the conflict over the Japanese-US Security Treaty and the Tokyo Olympics.
The title, "Japanese Summer," stood for both the fervor of those days and the season of the exhibition. The Japanese subtitle, "I Don't Give a Damn Anymore!" was borrowed from Ushio Shinohara's work presented at the eleventh "Yomiuri Independant" because it was considered to convey young people's excitement in that period.
The exhibition followed the development of art during those years by displaying works and materials including those about avant-grade movements around the country. This was no mere retrospection but was organized by making a point of reviewing art of the 1960s from the "present" standpoint or of exploring the relation between the 1960s and 1990s in terms of art.
