An exhibition marking the fifth anniversary of Art Tower Mito. This was given as the artist's first large-scale exhibition in Japan. To introduce Turrell's whole world of light to vision, it presented works from 1966 to now as well as Roden Crater Project, which, being under way in an Arizonan volcano, may be called his life work. His achievement was nothing but the creation of an environment in which light could be experienced through the senses. Some of the exhibits at Art Tower Mito were installations of light, such as Atlan, a luminous blue rectangle in darkness, and Zona Rosa, a work enveloped with hazy red light coming from some unknown source. Other exhibits inckuded a few examples of a series called "Perceptual Cells," such as Soft Cell, an anechoic room for experiencing darkness; and Gasworks, a sphere inside which one could experience light and color all over."Perceptual Cells"could admit a limited number of people a day, and so in the latter half of the exhibition period they gained such popularity that visitors waited in line sometimes even overnight, before the doors opened.
