Hockney's Opera

July 23 (Fri.),1993,to October 11 (Mon.),1993

The exhibition displayed stage designs by Hockney, celebrated pop artist and collagist.
Having a profound knowledge of music, the artist dealt with many stage designs, beginning with Ubu-Roi (the Royal Theater, London) in 1966. From a great number of designs, the exhibition picked out those for five operas, Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Le Rossignol, Mozart's The Magic Flute, Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and Puccini's Tourandot.
It consisted of about 110 pieces, such as one third scale models of stage sets or scenes, sketches and drawings recording his ideas, and pictures and prints. A stage model for Tristan and Isolde was equipped with computerized lighting to simulate the actual scene.
