Piotr Kowalski 1993 Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito photo: Shigeo Anzai

The first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan by Piotr Kowalski, an artist resident in France.
It was one of the enterprises undertaken on the annual theme of 1993, "Science as Knowledge." Since the 1950s, the artist, having studied mathematics and architecture, had carried on creative activities by adopting a scientific viewpoint. He was outstanding in having connected art with science as an extensive accumulation of knowledge. Drawing attention to science that promoted modernism, the artist illuminated the impasse of modernism and sought a new development in the encounter of art with science. Science would not be irrelevant to art but would be a poetic expression of wonder at nature. This had to be made clear.
For the exhibition, the artist selected major works from his past achievements and also produced new ones as well. The former included La machine pseudo-didactique (1961), a device for creating a chaos on rubber film, and Mesure a prendre (1969), a work designed for laying hold of cosmic energy. The latter included Lumiere, an homage to Newton, which projected a hologram rainbow on the wall.
