Mito Annual '92
Private Diary 10 Japanese Young Artists

February 15 (Sat.),1992,to April 5 (Sun.),1992

In the community where "great stories" on God, a universal principle or a single value standard, have lost their appeal, artists also take interest in "petty stories" surrounding their "self."
Painting and sculpture being no fixed divisions of art now, their expressions, released from walls and pedestals, show unbridled developments as "great diaries." In view of this situation, the exhibition was given its Japanese title, which literally translates as "Great Diaries / Petty Stories." It was intended to bring back public attention to the pleasure and beauty of forms and colors, which "contemporary art" had missed while it was pursuing political ideals and assthetic principles. Because of this purport, visitors may have found many pieces bright and cheerful at first sight. For Japanese artists, however, to produce works concerning the nature of the "self" is, of necessity, to think about the everyday world of Japan or Japanese culture. Indeed many exhibits touched the unconsciously overlooked depth of Japanese identity.
