Arata Isozaki: Architecture, 1960 / 1990
Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito
This was the first retrospective of achievements by Arata Isozaki who had led world architecture for thirty years since the 1960s when modernism was shaken by rising post-modernism.
The exhibition was divided into five sections: "I. Genesis of Imagination," "II. Birth of an Architect," "III. Catastrophe Japan," "IV. Architect as World Citizen" and "V. Hypertech Tokyo."
The exhibits included thirty self-selected works, thirty new silk-screen pieces, two hundred fifty drawings and prints, thirty-odd exquisite models, and "high-vision" images. They were intended to portray Isozaki as a universal artist and thinker who overstepped architecture. Because the Art Tower Mito building itself was the architect's latest product, the exhibition was given a dual demension, presenting his works inside his work.
