Christo's plan was to unfold 3,100 blue and yellow "umbrellas" in both Ibaraki and California for three weeks from October 8, 1991. It was seven years since the artist ahd first planned it at the end of 1984. Because the location of The Umbrellas on the Japanese side was just 20 kilometers north of Mito, an exhibition was organized to introduce this project to the public. The exhibition consisted of two sections: an overall, fully specified presentation of Valley Curtain, an early gigantic 2 year project he had accomplished in Rifle. Colorado in 1972; and an illustration of the concept and outline of The Umbrellas project itself. In addition to photographed documents and scale models, samples and materials, the gallery displayed various work, such as collages, painted photos, photographs, maps, technical sketches and writings, to make it possible to experience the process of the project first hand.
