The Game of Manners - Japanese Art in 1990

The opening exhibition for Art Tower Mito.
Marking its start, this gallery, which opened at the beginning of the 1990s, introduced works by 23 Japanese artists who began their careers or tried to establish their styles in the 1980s. These young artists developed varieties of matter and manner that they discovered in an age when no single trend could dominate.
The title, "The Game of Manners," symbolizes that age when one could not play by following rules but was forced to create one's own rules for expression. This exhibition, accordingly, was not intended as a retrospective view of art in the 1980s but mostly to show the latest styles of expression illustrated by several varieties of rules (manners).
The exhibition gathered together a considerable number of new pieces. It was characterized as "an attempt to foreshow the development of art in the 1990s." This was correct because most of the artists who participated in it would play important roles in the art scene in the 1990s.
