Yasuhiro Ishimoto
Photography Exhibition
October 9 (Sat.),2010,to November 7 (Sun.),2010

(c) Yasuhiro Ishimoto
A solo exhibition of the works of Yasuhiro Ishimoto, a Japanese photographer born in 1921.
Ishimoto's photographs are famous for the way he fixes a strong gaze on the subject, creating a pictorial scene with a finely-honed formative sense. In 1996 he was named a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government.
Ishimoto was born in San Francisco in 1921, but later returned to his father's home district of Kochi Prefecture in Japan. In 1939, he went back to the United States, this time to Chicago, in order to learn about photography at the New Bauhaus School of Design, which had inherited the educational ideals of the Bauhaus Movement. Starting around 1953, he traveled back and forth between the United States and Japan, greatly influencing the development of photography in postwar Japan. Since 1969 he has based himself in Japan, and continues to be energetically active in his field even though he is nearing 90 years old.
Although Ishimoto's representative series include "Chicago," "Katsura Rikyu," and "Ise Jingu," the current exhibition at Art Tower Mito instead features works borrowed from the Museum of Art, Kochi, which has provided around 300 photographs from its giant collection of Ishimoto's work.
