The Portrait of Alfred Schnittke

September 17 (Mon.),2012

The fifth in a series of concerts at ATM featuring the works of contemporary composers. This concert traces the creative path trodden by the Russian-born composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998). Although Schnittke was born in Russia (when it was part of the Soviet Union) and brought up there, linking him closely with the Russian spirit, his birth to a Jewish father (originally from Germany) and a Volga-German mother (born in Russia) meant that he was also exposed to other influences. Similarly, his music demonstrates a mixture of various factors and styles, as he explored new artistic possibilities. The musicians performing in the September 17 concert at ATM include the Arditti Quartet (led by Irvine Arditti), one of the world’s leading performers and interpreters of contemporary music, along with the renowned Japanese composer and pianist, Ichiro Nodaira.
