A recital by oboist Philippe Tondre, who is the youngest member of the Mito Chamber Orchestra (MCO). In May 2014, his performance in Mozart’s Concerto for Oboe in the MCO Regular Concert was wildly applauded by the audience, and extravagantly praised by MCO General Director Seiji Ozawa. Tondre will be accompanied in his recital by Hiroyuki Kato, a pianist with whom he frequently performs. The program includes several carefully-chosen pieces that will let audiences fully savor the beauty of the oboe.

Philippe Tondre

Oboe
Philippe Tondre has been Principal Oboe in the South West Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart since 2008. He also holds the position of Principal Oboe in the Mito Chamber Orchestra, the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra Matsumoto, both conducted by Maestro Seiji Ozawa, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Ivan Fischer.

He was born in Mulhouse France in 1989 and entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris at the age of 15, where he studied with David Walter, Frédéric Tardy, Alain Nollier and obtained his Master’s Degree with distinction in 2010. During his studies, he played with the French Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.

Philippe is prizewinner of all the major international oboe competitions. In 2008 he won third prize in The Prague Spring International Music Competition as well as the Gustav Mahler Prize for the youngest finalist, awarded by the Mahler Association 2000 Vienna. In 2009 Philippe won first prize in The Fernand Gillet – Hugo Fox Oboe Competition USA and that same year went on to win second prize in The International Oboe Competition Karuizawa Japan, organized by the Sony Music Foundation. In 2010 he was awarded third prize in The 65th Geneva International Music Competition and in 2011 went on to win The 60th ARD International Music Competition Munich with a second prize ( a first prize was not awarded ), as well as the audience prize and the special prize for the best interpretation of Liza Lim’s commissioned composition. In 2012, after his successful debut at the Beethoven Festival Bonn, Philippe Tondre was awarded the prestigious Beethoven Ring Prize.

Philippe manages to combine orchestral playing with his numerous solo engagements. He has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Munich, the Mito Chamber Orchestra, the Saito Kinen Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the South West Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, the New Mozart Orchestra London, the Kanzai Philharmonic Orchestra Japan, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, the Plsen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Thai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Südwestfalen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Collegium Musicum Basel Switzerland, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Tübingen Chamber Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the « La Follia » Ensemble and has played under the baton of conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, Myung Whun Chung, Neeme Järvi, Herbert Blomstedt, Fabio Luisi, Ivan Fischer, Christoph Eschenbach, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Marek Janowski, Daniel Harding, Asher Fisch,Vassily Sinaïsky, Nicolas McGegan, Heinz Holliger, Enrique Mazzola and Peter Eötvös.

In 2012, he appeared playing Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in the “ Stars of Tomorrow ” television programme produced by ARTE and hosted by Rolando Villazon and the following year played his « Debut » concert in the Philharmonie in Berlin accompanied by the German Symphony Orchestra. In his search for new repertoire, Philippe performed the German Première of James MacMillan’s Oboe Concerto under the baton of the composer and accompanied by the South West Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart. In September 2013, he played the Japanese Première of György Ligeti’s Double Concerto for Flute, Oboe and Orchestra with Jacques Zoon (flute) and the Saito Kinen Festival Orchesra conducted by Kazushi Ono.

As a chamber musician he appeared in numerous festivals such as the Beethoven Festival Bonn, the Mozart Festival Würzburg, the SWR Schwetzingen Festival and the Bad Kissingen Music Festival. His chamber music partners have included Maurice Bourgue, the Modigliani Quartet, Radek Baborak, the ARD Windquintett, Olga Watts, Denès Varjon, Jacques Zoon, Ricardo Morales, Patrick Ayrton and Sebastian Jacot. Philippe is also member of the Ludwig Chamber Players (Germany-Japan) and recently recorded with them pieces from Prokofiev under the « Tacet » label.

In 2014, Philippe performed the Mozart Oboe Concerto in Mito and Kawasaki with the Mito Chamber Orchestra. He is regularly invited to give Master-Classes in Germany, Austria, Japan, China and Taiwan.

Hiroshi Kato

Piano
Kato graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he won the Ataka Prize for the top student in his department. In 1990, he placed third in the piano division of the Geneva International Music Competition. He studied abroad at the Liszt Academy in Hungary under István Lantos. In 1996, Kato moved to Cologne, Germany, where he continued his studies under the pianist Pavel Gililov.

Kato’s career as a pianist has included joint performances with such orchestras as the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently pursues a career as a pianist in Europe, performing as both soloist and chamber musician, as well as participating in broadcast performances and recordings. In 2001, he was invited to perform at the International Chamber Music Festival in Limousin, France.

In recent years, Kato has frequently performed chamber music with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In particular, he has often appeared together with that orchestra’s chief concertmaster, Rainer Küchl since 1999. His performance at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2002 was highly lauded in a review by The Times. Also, during the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) in 2010, he performed Beethoven’s complete sonatas for piano and violin at the Musikverein Concert Hall over a three-day period, to great success.
