Flute
Profile
In 2022 Sebastian Jacot was appointed Principal Flute of the prestigious Berliner Philarmonic Orchestra. Until now, he has been covering the same position at the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, and was described as “a flute rock star” after gaining this acclaimed role.
A unique artist of his genre, he has gained a reputation as one of the most brilliant flutists of his generation winning first prizes in the most highly regarded flute competitions across the world: Kobe International Flute Competition 2013, Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition 2014, Munich ARD Music Competition 2015.
Sébastian began developing his career performing as a soloist with orchestras such as the Bayerische Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Geneva Chamber Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, Thai Philharmonic Orchestra, Mito Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Mannheim, Gstaad Menuhin Academy Orchestra, Osnabruck Theater Orchestra.
As an orchestral member he started in 2006, winning the position of assistant principal flute at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, when he was only 19, and in 2008 he became member of the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra.
After returning to Europe he deepened his knowledge of contemporary music, playing with the Ensemble Contrechamps, and began to freelance for Orchestre
Mozart, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, NDR
Elbphilarmonie Orchestra. His orchestral work has taken him to venues across the world: Carnegie Hall, Musikverein, Suntory Hall, KKL Luzern, Concertgebouw, Philarmonie Berlin, Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, Philharmonie de Paris and many others.
Sébastian has always loved to be part of an orchestra, which he considers a musical “home”, a place and moment where “all become one”, enjoying working with conductors of excellence such as: Seiji Ozawa, Andris Nelsons, Riccardo
Chailly, Claudio Abbado, Fabio Luisi, Herbert Bloomstedt, Semyon Bychkov, Simon Rattle, Heinz Holliger, Marin Alsop, Gustavo Dudamel, Zubin Metha, Bernard Haitink, Daniel Harding.
Apart from his orchestral experience Sébastian regularly gives solo recitals, and explores a wide range of chamber music repertoire together with other artists.
Most recently he has performed for the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden with artists such as Naoko Yoshino (harp), Hakuro Mori (cello), Shigeo Neriki (piano), Makoto Yoshida (clarinet), Kei Shirai (violin), Haruma Sato (cello), Ayako Tahara (viola). His other chamber music partners include: Agnès Clément, Philippe Tondre, Axel
Benoit, Nobuko Imai, Lucas Buclin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Romain Guyot.
A significant part of his life is dedicated to teaching and holding Masterclasses,
enthusiastically passing on professional and personal skills with passion and instinct. Between 2020 and 2022 Sebastian has been teaching at the University of the Arts Bremen.
He's often called as a jury member for various competitions including: Cluj International Music Competition, Singapore Flute Festival, Tampere Flute Fest and Conservatoire de Genève.
The flute fills up most of Sébastian's time, but he likes to be considered a fully rounded artist, having acquired a diploma in saxophone, and also being an iceskating champion and acrobat, which developed his conviction that body and
mind are intrinsically united in any performance art.
He participated as a dancer, acrobat and musician in the 1001 Lives project by choreographer Juliette Rahon.
This interest in physical activities, acrobatics and sports, comes from his childhood. As the eldest of six children who also became professional musicians, he still develops projects with them, combining circus skills and music.
Sébastian Jacot plays a rare wooden Haynes from 1999 and a 14k Parmenon.
