Co-sponsored by the Mito City Board of Education, the Performances for Drama Appreciation by Elementary Schoolchildren are aimed at the approximately 2,300 fourth graders attending grade schools in Mito City, giving the vast majority of them their first real opportunity to experience and appreciate actual theatrical performances. Each year, ATM pours a lot of energy into making sure the children leave the performance with valuable memories by carefully selecting the work to be performed and presenting it with all the trappings of the full theater experience. On weekends, furthermore, the same work is performed in the ACM Family Theatre project, giving the children’s families and others living in the vicinity to enjoy the same play. The Performances for Drama Appreciation by Elementary Schoolchildren series has had an unusually long run for a regional city of Japan. Featured this year is a production of the masterpiece, “Sukh’s White Horse,” a story about the friendship between a poor Mongolian shepherd boy and a white horse. Most Japanese have read the picture book at least once in their lives, and this is a chance for them to see the story relived on stage.
